What and who is MISASA?

MISASA is essentially the national flying club representing all microlight pilots in SA. It is run by a committee (I’ll introduce them all to you later) elected annually by the members at an Annual General Meeting. The committee’s brief of what they should, can and cannot do is set out clearly in the constitution and in future also by the Manual of Procedure (both are on the web page). MISASA is also the body which is recognized by the CAA as representing microlighters in SA and as such gets involved in helping formulate regulations etc.

To summarise MISASA’s objectives as per the constitution:

  • Encourage, develop and promote private and sporting microlight.
  • Operate as a Member Association of the Aero Club.
  • Liaise and co-operate with Government, Provincial and Municipal Departments.
  • Co-ordinate and control all forms of microlight aviation sport via a manual of procedure.
  • When authorized, issue, renew and withdraw licenses and ratings for microlight pilots, instructors and approved persons.
  • Carry out other activities as delegated by the CAA to the Aero Club.
  • Assist in establishing Microlighting Clubs in SA.
  • Popularise microlighting by providing members with facilities to obtain licenses and ratings where applicable.
  • Participate in, administrate and control microlight sporting events and trials organized by or run under rules of the FAI, the Aeroclub and MISASA
  • Hold or arrange for aviation meetings, competitions and such and to contribute towards the provision of prizes, awards and distinctions.
  • To promote air mindedness and safety amongst the members of MISASA and others, and to hold lecturers, demonstrations and exhibitions.
  • Adopt such means of making known the objectives of MISASA by advertising in the press etc. and by giving and granting prizes, rewards and donations.
  • Invest any moneys not immediately required for the purpose of MISASA.
  • Employ and remunerate clerical staff as may be required.
  • Set club amenities.

  • Give members the advantage of collective representation and control in all matters of importance in the furtherance of the objectives of MISASA.
  • MISASA shall be non-political and not exercise any gender, racial, or religious discrimination.

There are currently 700 paid up MISASA members and by the end of the year we expect the number will be about 1,200. Membership is renewable annually on the 1st January.
